AFLOAT is a free monthly magazine. Distribution is controlled via subscription and circulation throughout Australia. The majority of magazines are distributed in the greater Sydney area, south east Queensland, around Melbourne's Port Phillip Bay and at selected east coast locations from Eden on the NSW south coast to Townsville in Queensland.

AFLOAT was first published in November 1989 as Sydney AFLOAT. The inaugural issue contained 32 pages and had articles by Ian Kiernan (founder of Clean Up Australia and 1994 Australian of the Year), Captain Chaos (who still writes the Galley Gourmet column) and Tony Cable (the self-proclaimed world's best port-runner winch-hand). Robin Copeland has been Editor since the first issue. The Publishers are a husband and wife team - Suzy Bekkedahl (originally from California) and Peter Webb (born and bred in Sydney).
