As the angler is required to impart the action on the lure, you can vary from flat-out spinning across the surface, to deep-water jigging. In an estuary environment, the retrieve style depends on the actual situation you may find yourself in. If you are chasing kings or tailor that are active feeding on baitfish, you may not even have to wind the reel after the cast, as the simple action of the lure slowly sinking replicates a dead or wounded bait-fish. Using a very slow 'wind and twitch' retrieve gives the lure a darting action and leaves the bait in the strike zone for a longer period of time. Another effective retrieve is the stop/start method. Using an aggressive "wind-wind-wind" then a pause, then repeating the wind, gives the effect of a wounded baitfish sinking then darting in one direction, sinking, and then darting in another direction. A baitfish in the throws of dying makes an easy target, which predators take definite advantage of. This method also highlights the importance of imparting action on the lure with rod movements. Even though the simple act of winding the reel will result in the rod-tip moving, by imparting aggressive sideways flicks with the rod, it enhances the lure's action by giving it an exaggerated darting action. Combined with the lure's flexibility, this type of retrieve results in an action that many fish find irresistible. We recommend using a similar weight jig-head or sinker to the weight you would use if you where jigging with metal jigs. The difference to metal jigs in terms of action, however, is enormous as the up-and-down lift-and-wind action of jigging gives Battler Baits a fantastic action - the tail "flutters" up and down in the current. This can be very effective on our inshore and offshore reefs, and while jigging was not used as a fishing style, we have had reports of blue-eye cod and deep-sea trevalla being caught on GLOW Battler Baits in 500m of water!! Rigging a Battler Bait with a Treble Stinger Immediately slide 'z-bend' into lure so that eye of hook is inside plastic. Slip a treble hook onto the main hook, so that it will hang with its single point to the rear. Then after the lure is rigged straight on the main hook. The rigged lure should lie straight, as shown here. If it isn't straight, it will spin or move in a repetitive, rather than random manner, defeating the whole soft-stick advantage. Bury the rear-facing single point of the treble into the tail section of the Battler Bait, again being careful to ensure that the lure lies straight when completed.
