| The National Fishing Industry Education Centre (Natfish) is an innovative, flexible training centre. We offer a variety of accredited certificate and short courses for marine and freshwater industries covering aquaculture, seafood, marine studies and recreational fishing services. Courses are taught by highly qualified teachers with extensive industry experience, using up to date equipment and practices. The centre has been recognised for excellence in flexible delivery through various awards including a National Best Practice Award. Natfish is part of one of the leading training and education providers in Australia and NSW - North Coast TAFE who are twice winners of the NSW Large Training Provider of the Year Award in 2004 & 2005, and winner of the 2004 Australian Large Training Provider of the Year Award. Aquaculture Introduction Natfish delivers Certificate II, Certificate III, Certificate IV and Diploma courses in aquaculture, as well as short courses such as Hatchery Techniques, Recirculation Technology and Seafood Safety. The Certificate and Diploma courses are delivered flexibly, which means they involve a combination of external study and practical workshops. The courses can be studied full time or part time. You choose the number of subjects you wish to enrol in each year and may change your enrolment during the year if you need to. All students start in the Certificate II level course, which covers the basic, practical skills and knowledge required for working in the aquaculture industry, and then progress through the certificate levels, up to Diploma level if desired. Workshops Most units require compulsory attendance at practical workshop blocks. At the workshops you will participate in practical activities, you may also go on field trips and complete practical and written assessments. Workshops are timetabled so that you attend a block covering the requirements for several units to save you travelling too often. Morning and afternoon tea is provided at the workshop, but you have to provide your own lunch. Facilities available include student kitchen with microwave, fridge, freezer and a BBQ. Natfish is 10km from town and students often travel a considerable distance to attend workshops and want to make the most of their time here, we therfore have a tight timetable for workshops. You are encouraged to bring lunch with you rather than leave the campus in the short lunch break. Learning materials Notes for the units are sent out to you, four to six weeks before each workshop block, to help you pace your studies. Some units do not have notes and are taught entirely at the workshop. There are also support materials for most units on this website, under the Student Resources button in the left hand menu at the top of this page. You must read the notes, and complete the activities contained in them at home prior to attending the workshop as you will be required to sit a unit test at most workshops. Costs There are two different charges when you enrol in one of the aquaculture course - the TAFE NSW Course Fee and the Course Related Charge, as well as some optional expenses. TAFE NSW Fee There is an annual TAFE NSW Fee for each course you enrol in. The charge is different for each course and is reviewed each year. The current fee is advised under each course, use the Course Information button at the top left of this page. The TAFE NSW Fee can be paid by semester and you will be asked to pay each year when you re-enrol until you complete the course. You may be eligible for a concession fee if you are receiving any government benefits.. Course Related Charge The Course Related Charge covers the unit notes, morning and afternoon teas during workshops and other resources you require at the workshop, or will require to complete assessments at home. The charge is different for each course and is reviewed each year. Again the current fees are listed under each course, which you can select from the menu at the top left of this page. The Course Related Charge should be paid at enrolment to ensure you receive your learning materials on time. Student Association Fee We recommend that all students join the Student Association. The association provides many services to Natfish students, including BBQ lunches and pizza days for members at some workshops, discounts with many retail outlets around the state and is constantly improving student facilities on the campus providing things like outdoor furniture and much more. Other Costs You will need to pay for your own travel to and from workshops, accomodation whilst attending workshops and for your lunches during workshops. The course is delivered face to face at the Coffs Harbour campus as a full time course over 1 semester. Attendance is required for 3 to 4 days per week and there is a one week field trip to Hastings Point Marine Education Centre. Marine Studies can also be studied by distance flexible delivery through Natfish. Costs There are two different charges when you enrol in the marine studies course - the TAFE NSW Fee and the Course Related Charge, as well as some optional expenses which the teachers will outline to you when you start. Courses are a mixture of work based training, distance education and where appropriate some classroom sessions. The benefit of this approach is the focus is on recognising and formalising skills that the student already uses and/or has learnt on the job and providing targeted training where needed. Assessment for the courses will be a mixture of work-based assessment such as observations in the workplace, assignments and campus based assessment (such as tests or practical assessment events). Recreational Fishing Introduction Australian spend more time fishing than any other recreational sport or pastime. Anglers contribute to retail turnover to the tune of $550 million per annum in NSW alone. Natfish delivers a Certificate II and III Fishing Industry, Recreational Services which is aimed at people looking to gain work servicing the recreational fishing industry. The courses prepare you to work in areas such as tackle shops, fishing equipment wholesale, fishing tours and charter boat operations. You learn basic and advanced fishing techniques, about weather, safety and the regulatory and environmental responsibilites associated with fishing. Students start off in the Certificate II course then move on to the Certificate III once they have completed the Certificate II. This gives close access to great fishing spots around the lower Clarence and surrounding coast. Student Support North Coast TAFE supports Natfish students with a wide range of services including counselling, disability services, tutorial support, and aboriginal student support. These services can be accessed both whilst students are on campus or by phone. North Coast TAFE Student Support web page tells you more about these services and how to access them. North Coast Library Services provide students with support with study and assignments, including writing, learning and presentation skills on their Learning Centre site. The Information Centre contains a wide range of library web resources, E-books, catalogues. Natfish also provides internet support materials and information using Moodle, a web based learning platform. To go to the Natfish internet course documents select Primary Industry and Natural Resources course category, then Seafood Industries. Note this service is only available to enrolled students. On campus a student resource room housing a large collection of resource books, videos and student computers with Internet access is available.
