The city centre and riverside Seaport precinct offer lively bars and cafes, while the Tasmanian home of AFL and the Hawthorn Football Club, Aurora Stadium, plays host to numerous matches and masses of interstate visitors throughout the year. On top of its awe-inspiring scenery, Cataract Gorge also hosts some very special music events due to the amazing acoustics and it's all just a short stroll from the CBD. In fact, Launceston boasts major music festivals, national and international sporting events, an eclectic art scene, an enormous food and wine culture and even one of the country's best-loved breweries - Boags, all in one neat, livable package. It's the perfect blend of urban lifestyle with nature on the doorstep. Click here to find out why it is that we love Launceston so much, and why we think you will too. Campus AMC is a world-renowned maritime institute located across three purpose-built campuses in Northern Tasmania. The main campus sits alongside the University of Tasmania in Launceston, a thriving regional city with lower living costs than capital cities. Only 45 minutes north on the western bank of the Tamar River, picturesque Beauty Point is home to seafaring and fisheries training facilities and AMC's fleet of vessels, while on the East Tamar, the Fire-Fighting Centre caters for a range of emergency response training. All three AMC campuses are in the most practical locations, aimed at giving our students a well-rounded university experience through easy access to facilities, amenities and recreational activities. In 1980, a number of seafaring students celebrated their academic achievements at AMC and left with little fanfare to begin their professional lives. They were the first of our graduates and 30 years on many of them are still working in the maritime industry both in Australia and overseas. In 2010, AMC is a different place to the one those young men and women experienced. AMC is now an institute of the University of Tasmania with purpose-built campuses in Northern Tasmania. Across the campuses we have a world-class suite of teaching and research facilities that include our key areas of seafaring, management and logistics, maritime engineering and the marine environment. Last year we further extended that reputation with the opening of the new Centre for Maritime Simulation and the Cavitation Research Laboratory. These provide a far greater scope for our undergraduate, postgraduate and vocational students. While our range of courses, facilities and student numbers have changed over the years, our commitment to providing maritime and maritime-related education and training of highest quality and standards has remained the same. Our students can expect a practical and industry-relevant learning experience and we continue to offer a student-centred, friendly environment in which small class sizes ensure academics work closely with students to develop their knowledge, skills and abilities. Most importantly, our students leave AMC well prepared for their chosen career paths. We maintain close relationships with our key industries and subject ourselves to constant and rigorous review to ensure our courses and, as a result, our graduates, are at the forefront of their fields. This approach has kept our graduate employment rate close to 100% and kept AMC among the world's 10 leading maritime training organisations. It is always the case that we look to the future but 2010 also gives us cause to look back as we launch our Alumni program and celebrate 30 years of AMC graduates. A number of very special events will be held throughout this year and will reflect the truly international nature of AMC. It is so often the case that we talk in terms of our teaching and research but 2010 is very much a year focused on our most important asset - our people.
